                     The Scrub Pole

                      A Versatile HF Vertical Antenna

General Description.

This Antenna was initially developed for field operations as a simple to erect multi band HF vertical.   The assembled antenna is 10 metres in overall height with a natural resonance in the 40m amateur band.

It consists of 6 telescopic sections of 6060 alloy aluminium tube ranging from 28mm diameter at the base to 12mm for the upper section.   The tube sections are finished with a green/grey powder coat to provide long term protection and also reduce the visual impact.

The antenna needs support by guying.   Guy rings at two levels are provided for attaching guy ropes.

The antenna base options can be a simple nylon insulator, or our compact tilting base with 4mm screw attachment points for radial wires.

Matching Techniques

The simplest way to turn this antenna into a versatile ‘All Band’ unit is to feed it with an automatic antenna coupler such as the SG-230 or the SG-237 at the base.   With either of these couplers all HF amateur bands can be matched including 160m if the ground plane is adequate.

Another technique is to use custom matching networks.   These tend to have lower loss than an auto antenna cou0ler but have the disadvantage in that you have to visit the base of the antenna to change bands.  We can supply matching units for the 80, 40, 20 and 17m bands.  We can achieve a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 140Khz with the 80m matching unit.

The power handling ability of all matching units is in excess of 600W.

For best performance the Scrub Pole should be worked against a good ground plane.  We recommend a minimum of 4 radials with their length exceeding the mast height.
